It was a good day on set!

No, that’s not the set we were on.  Pretty fun shot though.  I think we own the same steadicam rig.  Naturally I do not have permission to post the image, so just send me a cease & desist and I’ll take ‘er down.

This is a fun shot of the set we were on.

a fully operational mother ship

Three cameras passed into the Tricaster so we can rip a rough edit as we go.  Very nice.  Also, easiest colour matching ever.

Anyone who has spent any time on set can tell you (and Marjorie would) that there can be a lot of hurry up and wait.  Sometimes it’s a model’s hair, sometimes it’s a script issue.  There are all sorts of ways to bring production grinding to a halt.  The hallmark of a veteran is that production is never waiting for you.  You do not want to be the reason everybody stays late.  That gets expensive.  Also grumbly.  Nevertheless, we had a good day.  Radios help.  Matt knows what I’m talking about.  The difference between working locations, living on channel 1, and hating your life, to working special effects, living on channel 9, and enjoying another peaceful day of telling dirty jokes and making sure the smoke machines don’t run out of juice.

Not to give the wrong impression – we’re working with great people on this shoot.  We really are having a good time building a great product with them.

But I did mention that there can be a certain amount of waiting while stuff happens off set.  So, you pass the time.

Adrian passes a spare moment on set.

I spent ten minutes trying to get a nice spinny shot of my face.  Fun, right?

I was a little sulky this morning because I left home long before the sun had even threatened the horizon, and Avery wasn’t up yet/again/still.  I didn’t get to kiss her goodbye.  So Marjorie, love her to death, sent me my kiss.

Well, close enough to a kiss for me.  She was probably pooping.  Shut up.  She’s still ridiculously adorable.  The kiss made me miss my girls way more, but it made my day, too.

Tomorrow, production call is 8am.  That is awesome.  Still, time for this camera jockey to get to sleep.

Happy Friday, in case that’s where you are when you read this.  If not, well, that’s something to look forward to.

Avery got her first shot today.  She didn’t like it at all – at all at all.  But she recovered quickly enough.  Fell asleep on me on the walk home in less than fifty feet.  I think her leg may be aching from the shot though.  Bit of work getting her to go down tonight.

Speaking of, I’m off as well.  Call time tomorrow is 7am, and the studio is two trains from here.  If I were made of money I would just book a car.  We’ll see how I feel this time tomorrow.

So, I wish I could chat more, but a man’s gotta work.  Be well.

No picture today!  Instead I bring you tidings of (end Charlie Brown Christmas quote here)

First there was just a precious few minutes of hugging my girl this morning – not even enough time to change her, and off I went to-

Next was the tablet biz conference.  I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t watch a single speaker.  Well, I caught a bit of the Tabby Awards, because, like, first time ever.  You gotta.  Instead of sitting through what looked like interminable reiterations of what we 1) already know or 2) don’t need even a little bit, we mingled with crew at the 15 booths.  We hoped to find coders, and what we found was a bunch of people in excellent positions to take our money.  We’re thinking that there may be some room for a middle ground.  We’ll see.  Frankly we’re looking to hire.  Somebody shiny will help grow their own a once-in-a-lifetime career with us as software developer.  We know the job is not small.  That why we’re talking about careers and not contracts.  This is major domo.  Corporate Leader type stuff.  Sign on and in two years you should be the head of a department overseeing distribution and implementation to well over a hundred thousand users at the admin level.  The client level app is many times that, but will take care of itself if you do your job right.

So.  Not screwing around, is what I’m saying.  This is well paid, career making work.  Given that we know what we want, however, means you have to know your chops.  If you can code cross platform iOS and Android in Flash (or convince us to go another direction) then we should be talking.  Please get in touch.  I’ma put your kids through college.  And a pool in your backyard, if that’s what you’re into.  Or a skate park, if that’s what rings your bell.

Anyway, the conference was excellent – small enough that we could talk one on one with everyone we wanted to meet, while big enough that the people we wanted to meet were there.  Some of them.  No sign of Apple, or Google, or MS.  Given the strength of the players that were there, however, I imagine they will be there next year.  Maybe this spring, if the organizers know what’s good for them.

After the Expo, Lee and I adjourned to a pub to debrief, figure out our next step, and push forward with pre-pro for the Thurs-Fri shoot with LP.  Not gonna lie here, having our end covered two days out is *wonderful*.  That’s how it’s supposed to be done.  Also how it’s supposed to be done is hiring a PA to do the bulk of the lifting.  Matt knows what I’m talking about here.  So Rita found us a PA with a van.  Outstanding.  We may not be at the stage where we can trust a PA to lock our gear up in the corral for the night, but surely that stage is near.  Let this guy not suck, and we will hire him (and a friend) repeatedly and for always.  For us production folk, that means the end of the shoot is the end, rather than the beginning of tear down and gear returns, which is always a trial, and nothing to which a hard working production team deserves to be subject.  Listen to me, princess of production.  I must be camera department.  Such ladies.

I came home to a daughter already in bed and asleep.  Boo.  But then Marjorie and I got to chat with my sister and that was terrific!  It feels weird to say she’s an amazing lady, because she’s my punk sister, but she is an amazing lady.

Gotta roll for bed, because tomorrow is coming.  Winter also, but chiefly, at this juncture, tomorrow is the germain concern.  With immediacy.  So… g’night everybody!
