You try to find some profound words to express your appreciation for your mom. To let her know that after all the years of taking her for granted and stretching the limits of her patience and compassion, it was all worth it because now, with a kid of your own, you have a sense of what she went through for you.

There aren’t really words, are there? And even though she of course would love some acknowledgement, she wasn’t ever doing it for the thanks. She just wanted you to have your wheels on straight so you’d be all right when you zoomed off to do your own Great Things.

When I think about how much I’ll miss Avery when she’s off doing her own Great Things, I wonder how my mom ever let me go. Not that she could have stopped me. I guess in that sense she did the very best job possible. Because I was off like a shot, no hesitation, out the door to go figure it out on my own. Pretty much fearless.
