Radio = fun.
Sure enough the time flew by. The first half of the show blew past before we knew it. Lots of laughs and great music. Around 5:30 I felt tiredness hit, which is what’ll happen after you’ve exhausted the miracle power of five cups of coffee. Sooner or later your bod wises up to the fact it’s 5:30 in the morning and the phone has stopped ringing.
It was definitely our first show. True to concept we kept it random, but I would have liked to do more spots with the email address, for example. A bit more organization wouldn’t have hurt too much. We were just too comfortable (Davin forgot we were on the air & was forced to apologize for a slip of the tongue). I guess that happens when you’ve got that much collective experience in the room. What was it? “Flawless Professionalism.” Yes. We had so much fun we continually forgot to maintain any sort of direction.
With all our brainstorming we only ended up touching briefly on our material, which is cool because it means the show will have a long & happy life full of original stuff we haven’t had time to use yet.
Jim came on as our guest producer, and may very well reprise the role repeatedly, because he fit right in. And by producer I mean mostly answering the phone. Davin had to do the actual producing, because the rest of us haven’t even had a good look at the board yet. I actually kinda like having one of the three of us doing the production, because we know the music. On the other hand, I guess you don’t have to know the music to plug in a cd when it gets handed to you.
It’s a great crew we’ve got there. I think we’re going to have a blast. Perhaps several blasts. We know each other well enough to gel, but not so well that it’s all inside jokes. Works out nicely.
Like I said- we have tons of material still to come, and I suspect we’re going to get more & more submissions through our blogs & the official email address- random_radio at that hotmail place. And soon will come the official site. Don’t be shy. There’s been great response so far and I really want to keep that up. Be as random as you wanna be. It doesn’t have to be funny (we can take care of that for you). It just has to be something that made you stop & think, “Hey- I should send that to the Random Radio guys.” Everything from quotes to sound clips to dreams to ratting out your ex’s most embarrassing moments. One idea I think is going to catch on is, “Think your job sucks? We can prove it.”
And yes, there’s always the very very good music, every Saturday night (Sunday morning) starting at 3am on HOT 101.9 CFUV, the Ocean ZoneQ (the Q is silent).
Yippee.
I am so glad we are on the same page. I had an absolute blast, didn’t feel the pressure of being on the air, but also feel with time we need to (and will) take it up a level.
I think with practice and a little more (ok ANY) planning we can maintain a high level of entertainment. It doesn’t alway have to be funny, as long as it is engaging and entertaining. Btw, you had us in stitches when interviewing Sven. That was funny.
We have a good idea about what we need to do and that itself is a big step. SO looking forward to next week.
COMMENT:
yo boy – is it possible to hear this thingamajig online?
Congrats guys, it sounds like it was an absolute blast! I’m sure you’ll have fun mixing it up, and rather than looking for content you’ll never find time to fit it all in. Which is perfect.
Cheers!
kyle, you’re supposed to be able to. I emailed them because the stream wasn’t working and they said they’d look at it on Monday.
Glad to hear it went smoothly.
My weekend was of the uber-relaxed (and almost bordering on mind-numbingly boring) variety, so I was asleep by 11:30pm on Saturday night.
Yes, I will say that again for you: 11:30pm on Saturday night.
I have an inkling that I’ll be up and able to hear ya next weekend, though– just call it a hunch.

Download the show! Davin put it up for a week at the temporary mini-site over here: http://davin.ws/~ariz0na/museum/randomradio/
Good times. Think of it as a journey, like prog house. But funny. And Random.
SO looking forward to next week. I’m listening to the show now and I can’t get the grin off my face. Wooha! =)

Really glad to hear that you are finally doing something like this. You’ve definately had the voice and music to come out and be a great success at yet another thing. So all you have to do is look up that http://yada yada and anyone can hear the show from anywhere?
