fun & loomings

It’s true. Lately I’ve been as bad at blogging as most of the scallywags in my VIP list in the sidebar over there. That’s right. I went there. Scallywags.

I’ve been working. And that’s that. The odd thing is that I have been under more pressure in the past. The first three episodes of Da Vinci’s were about as nuts as I hope this job ever gets. I don’t think anyone actually slept. There just wasn’t time.

This past week though the editors sorta had time off while Miguel and Brad mixed a movie. Instead of taking time off I volunteered to shadow the mix in the hopes of learning something. It’s no secret I’d very much like to get picked up by the studio once the contract is up, so I have to be an asset and not just a pretty face who knows how to use the in-house networks. Although that does make me an asset already…

Anyway, I have lots to learn. So while the editors enjoyed a few days off to catch their breath I flipped my internal clock and hit the studio at eleven each morning to see what I could see. Turns out there really isn’t much for us Assistants to do once the mix is actually happening. Once the sessions are loaded, the analog patches are patched and the digital paths are… pathed… we mostly just try to keep busy while keeping an ear peeled for the page.

What I want to be doing is learning ProTools, the core software for today’s progressively minded audio-types. A couple of the guys here have generously offered me their textbooks from their $25,000 courses. Durn nice of ’em. I try not to feel guilty that I didn’t pay $25,000 to get here. I was a dj for ten years and I have an ear for production. That’ll do if you know the right people. The upshot is that I feel like I have to work twice as hard to justify my position. So I guess I wasn’t a bad hire.

Between now & the end of January I have to absorb everything there is to know about how to use a million bucks worth of gear, gadgets and guh… software (my alliterator broke, sorry).

I’m actually pretty confident. I feel like I’m in my element here. I’m a year or two away from blazing across the keyboard like these guys but I know I can do it. Love that.

Meanwhile- who watched Intelligence? What did you think? Got enough questions to justify a series? I haven’t seen it yet but I did get my copy of the DVD, complete with my name in the credits. Woo! My very own first credit. Yes, that is exciting.

In other news davin reports that the site is frighteningly close to a launchable stage of completion. Shnykees… then what?

What drivel! Scallywags! I bet you do not know what a “Scallywags” are! You are no closer to the East cost life than Vancouver is going to win the Stanley Cup!

You owe me two things buddy-boy. One is a phone number. The other is an address. If you don’t… there will be trouble.
