Creepy little bastards.
I’m totally comfortable working around busy bees and spiders and snakes, but wasps still make me nervous.
Billy or Mark suggested that’s because in the Fall, when they know they’re dying, they get ornery and decide to go out with a bang. Somehow we instinctually know this.
I think it’s a safe bet Neil’s landlord doesn’t let this hive last that long.
At least I was able to sit quietly nearby for a few minutes and watch them build. They are industrious, if not so elegant as bees.
Earlier today I happened to be standing in the right place to hear a wasp gnaw at a fence post. Fierce little jaws those guys must have if I can hear a single little bastard gnawing from two feet away.
Anyway, I’ve got to get to bed but I wanted to share. And thanks to Steve and Neil for joining my li’l cancer research team. All are welcome, so don’t feel shy. We’re far from elitist about stuff like that.

Sleep well, all. Only 28… er…27 days til my b-day.
Werd to the wasp hating. I have been know to freak out on more than one occasion when wasps are near. It’s not even that being stung hurts that much, it is just the whole hive-mind aggression thing that bothers me. Wasps happen to be one of my irrational fears. Well, the most rational of my irrational fears, but still.

Only thing more ornery than wasps are crows this time of year. For whatever reason, they’re especially nasty around my place.
I understand the instinct to protect their young, but this one bird was buzzing myself for two and a half blocks this morning. This poor young lass with her hair in a bun on the top of her head was being used for target practice, so we decided to walk together – strength in numbers and all that.
Though – really – I think she did it because I was 6 inches taller – and it was much more likely the crow would smack me in the head.
Such is the price of chivalry…
dood, I despise wasps…I was 12 and I got stung at the top of my nose, near my eye…you talk about pain…ewww…not a pretty site.
