The 6-7-8s
I took 45 minutes to make the 17 minute walk to work this morning. I was doing so well getting out of the house early, too.
A new friend (Hi, Alison!) happened to mention in the course of a conversation that she wasn’t very good at giving or receiving compliments. She said it felt a bit like losing something, an edge, it made you vulnerable. I see it inversely. I was thinking of the difference you make in someone’s day as soon as you catch their eye with a smile and say good morning. You have so much power over someone with just a few words.
The reason I mention it is that on my mini-epic walk in to work a charming old lady asked with a big smile if I was taking pictures of the cobwebs. Now, first understand that if I was a cute little old lady I probably wouldn’t talk to me. Especially in the morning. I probably looked like I had rolled out of bed into a box of tacks. That’s just how I look in the morning. But she saw me with my camera and when we walked past each other a moment later she not only opened the conversation but took the time to repeat herself when I took my headphones off.
We only talked for a moment but she made my day so much better just by making the effort to be friendly.
It’s a totally overcast day out there, but I feel like the sun is shining, you know?
nice post!!
good morning!
COMMENT:
thanks, d00d! life is good! a very good morning to you as well.
Being friendly on the street is something i live for. Making short but memorable connections can be very uplifting.
I’m working on the compliment thing. I’ve already given one this morning. Well, sort of, hey, i’m working on it.
Sunny feelings all around
Now I wanna hear about this landmark sort-of compliment.
hey alison, if i could leave a message on your blog i would. but i can’t, and i see you look here. so, nice design, i like it!
Thanx Davin,
i’m in the process (okay, i haven’t actually started yet, but i think about it regularly) of adding comment ability to my site. The trouble is, my pride wants me to build it myself rather then use a free tool, ie MT. hope to see you there when it’s up.
I have never been to this website before. I think this is very well written and I enjoyed reading it. I think I will link this website to mine….if you don’t mind.
Thanks very much, Angela. You made my Saturday. I’d be honoured to be linked. Now I’m off to visit you at http://mycommonplacebook.blogspot.com.
