b&w vol.1&2

New gallery posts over there. The promised black & whites in two volumes. Peruse, comment, enjoy.

Oh! While I think of it: don’t forget to click on “show love here” and vote for your favorite dj. Blizg only tracks one click per IP per three months, but anytime you’re on a new puter you can slide me another thumbs-up. (/blatant self promotion). Fun!

  1. I love the pictures in the gallery, some of them were really intense and some were just lovely. Thanks for sharing them, and I hope you post more soon!

    COMMENT:
I enjoyed the pics. thanks! I really liked the people-shots. B&W makes every body looker deeper, smarter, with more meaning, etc. funny how that is. what is it about B&W film that infuses that into every photo?

  2. I fully agree with you, Ev.

Black and white pics are pretty much the only type of pics of myself that I can handle… I think it has something to do with shading / shadows… they add depth.

  3. Lovely set of shots… some particulary strong photos that I enjoyed.

Curious. Did you scan the neg’s or prints? and what brand/model did you use? I have a Canon DU660 (I think… jeeze it’s hiding somewhere), that scans negs/slides as well as prints.

Why B&W looks better than color? I’ve always thought that the color becomes a distracting feature of a photo that only hinders other important aspects of the shot, such as composition, form, and graphic concepts. Unless the color is an important feature of the shot (like a macro of a flower or something), it’s probably uneeded. Not that color is bad, you can do some really cool stuff with some nice rich color slides, and I really prefer color over B&W in the studio.

Maybe it’s more of a classic thing. Looks better cuz it’s the classic technique. I dunno.

But they look good DJ. Keep it up.

  4. Thanks for the nods, guys. They’re all prints scanned on an AGFA SnapScan 1210u.

Volume 1 are all matte finish and volume 2 are glossy. I think I may never go matte again. Matte I think is perfect for pics that are going to get handled a lot, but for scanning and archiving I prefer glossy.

I’d LOVE to scan negs. I’d like to see the difference in detail at high-res for myself. Until I’m rich I’ll make do with the gear at the Mill. ;)

I’m in full agreement with Jonathan about B&W. Colour can be very distracting if it’s not an integral part of the frame. It also makes shots look more candid and pedestrian. Black & whites demand more soul & composition just by their nature. If you view a colour frame as b&w you suddenly see so much more detail and the pic becomes, usually, more meaningful.

And, yes, colour is awesome if it belongs there. We’ve all taken shots just because of the colours. Sunsets & gardens and all that.

*sigh* I love photography. NEED digital! Who’s got $1100 to lend a worthy dj?

  5. I know you’d love the neg’ scanners. The detail is frickin’ ridiculous. The one I used (Nikon) had 8x oversampling up to 6000 DPI. It would scan the neg’ 8 times and composite the best parts of each scan.

  6. Wow, I love black and white. You’ve inspired me. *grabs camera and heads outside*

  8. more funny than creepy don’t you think?
