I’ve been sharing my computers’ idle time for over a couple years now, first along with a couple of the crew at Wondermill and now on my own. A lot of people worry about the risk of access, but to them I say: you’re silly. To everyone else I say: check out the stats for what Grid.org has done so far. I mean, seriously. Globally we’re doing 247 years of research every day in cpu time.
Give it some thought, anyway. And join my team, the mischiffous machines. We’re trying to cure cancer here, among other things. And you aren’t using your box’s idle time, so why not?
You know – I had forgotten about this when I upgraded my system last year – good to be back with a new team…
COMMENT:
Woohoo! Now of course it becomes an issue: how to edit the team’s description? Nuts. But welcome aboard d00d!
there. I just bumped us up the list by almost 5,000 places. Member status increased by another…
thenks meng! we r legion.
oh- while I think of it: gurton was wondering what the dealio was with running united devices full time. truth is most apps only use a tiny bit of your processing power. if you’re downloading or burning a dvd you might use more, but usually your box is 98% idle even if you’ve got photoshop, word, and explorer running. united devices just uses all that free cpu time to make calculations. you never even notice it’s there, and the screensaver is a nifty 3d model of the particle being tested. all upside, no downside. wrrd.
