9-0, it’s okay to marry gay

Supreme court approves same-sex marriages

Commenting on the decision Prime Minister Martin said that he had struggled with the debate himself, but that what it came down to in the end for him was the Charter of Rights and the fundamental guarantee it provides for equality.

My hat’s off to him for pointing that out. As soon as we accept that a gay man or woman still has the same rights in all other regards as any other human being (the right to vote, the right to own property, the right to retain a lawyer) then we acknowledge that this person is an equal in society. Granted?

And you accept that marriage has to be between adults safely beyond the age of consent, yes?

And no doubt you agree that the state does not have the right to tell you you can’t marry the person you love, provided you’re both consenting and otherwise legally permitted to marry in Canada, right?

So… if you’re both legally permitted to marry in Canada…

It’s easy for me because I’ve never really had to struggle with it. If two people are in love and they’re both old enough to have some idea of what commitment means then why not? Nobody gets hurt. For me it’s the exact same as race or religion. Twenty-five years ago it was the height of scandal for a white person to marry a black person, but because we’d managed to push equal rights far enough along on that particular road there wasn’t anything legal to be debated on the subject. You just got cut out of the will by your disapproving parents who were so far behind the times you were happy to have them out of your life.

That’s kinda how I feel now, except I can’t load every one of these out-of-date neanderthals on to a bus and ship them off the deep end. I have to play nice-nice and try to educate them.

So thank you, Supreme Court of Canada, and thank you Prime Minister Paul Martin, and thank you Prime Minister Jean Chretien. And thank you to every other clear-thinker out there that knows your eight-year-old son won’t catch The Gay just because Chad & Brad next door just got back from their honeymoon.

  1. Well put, Adrian… I linked this post to my blog.

If anything, that eight-year old is going to grow up to be an accepting man with some compassion.

  2. Aww. Thanks guys. It’s all because I have enormously positive influences in my life like Jason. And welcome to the show, Summer. Very glad to have you.

  3. I loved reading your comments and feelings on this subject. i feel the same way, if you are lucky enough to find someone to love and someone who will love you in return race, gender, religion or whatever differences there may be should not matter. I am so happy you aren’t one of those close minded, uneducated idiots that have prevented the change for this long. :-):-)

    i “heart” you.
