i didn’t see that coming

It looks like the Academy has learned its lesson. Give the people what they want. Blockbusters swept the awards, which, I think, is as it should be. But…

But it begs the question- should the members of the Academy be voting the popular vote? Shouldn’t the awards reflect the common sentiment of those members, rather than that of the slack-jawed hordes of movie goers who go where they’re pointed?

Giving Tom Cruise or Jack Nicholson an award for acting like themselves, in my opinion, is stupid. Jack finally took a small departure from playing himself in About Schmidt, where he does seem to reach a little. But Tom- well, he’s always Tom, and that’s boring.

I digress. If we’re going to talk Actor, then we’ll talk Johnny Depp and Gary Oldman. But that’s another conversation.

No, I just wanted to know why the Academy Awards are a big deal. Some sort of People’s Choice Awards should be a big deal. The Actors’ Guild awards should be a big deal (and yes, Johnny took Best Actor for Pirates, thankyouverymuch). Shows where there’s all the flash and glitter and glamour, but where we get to see what we want to see- the Academy telling us what they thought, and the Actor’s Guild telling us what they thought, and the People’s Choice Awards telling us what we think.

Just my two bits.

  1. Award shows suck.

Stephen and I watched bits and pieces of the Academy Awards and were bored to tears.

Every year it’s the same old thing. Three and a half hours of it.

    COMMENT:
In defence of Tom Cruise, his performance in the last samurai kept leaving me in awe throughout the movie because he was amazing. Probably one of the best acting performances I have ever seen.

    imho

  2. But I must say that Peter Jackson finally got the recognition that he deserved for his directing talent on the three epic movies of LotR. And I’m just happy with that. Plus with the 11 wins it just rubs it in the face of the “I’m the center of the World” mentality of the US that great movies aren’t always made (in every sense of the word) by USA.
    There’s my two cents

  3. Granted I haven’t seen Last Samurai, and I have heard Tom was good in it. I’ll see it, and maybe my low expectations will be blown away. I’m game.

I rememember when New Line was putting out cheap horror flicks & ninja movies. They’ve certainly grown up.

Hey Abby- weren’t you supposed to get in touch about a photo shoot? Suddenly got shy? =)

  4. Maybe those boobs of hers got deformed.

(I WAS going to say ‘smaller’ but we all know size isn’t the issue. Who cares how big they are if they are fuggin ugly)
