Somewhere in the distant and shady past some insecure and sexually repressed men decided sex was something to be embarrassed about. It’s possible, and only just possible, that this evolved from the basic tenet of any religion – sacrificing something pleasurable to demonstrate holy devotion. Church fathers may have foregone sex and this gradually became interpreted as a sure sign that sex must be evil. This is only a theory, but people being what they are (i.e. basically stupid in large groups), I find this evolution of prudery to be quite likely. And don’t forget the necessity of vilifying women in the name of distancing your church from the historically far more popular female creator/progenitor mythos.
But all that is another post, or several if you’ve been a long-time reader. Most of our planet, for some reason, is all messed up about sex. In my opinion it’s the fact we don’t talk about it that causes the hang-up, which prevents us from talking about it, ad infinitum.
Take America, for example. In the current state of neo-conservatism, where anything fun must be evil and only serving the sinister mandate of the terrorist Muslim hordes in their bid to erode Democracy, sex hasn’t been this verbotten since the fifties. Yet for some reason they continue to allow blood, gore, and rape on tv. Again, that’s another post. I digress.
As I was saying, a celebrity nip-slip is scandalous news. We are shocked to discover they have nipples at all, I guess. But surely a convention devoted to exploring technology, policy and standards of the emerging adult-content-for-mobile-devices industry, surely you could expect to see some samples? We’re talking portable porn, just to be absolutely clear. But no, not a boobie to be seen.
I’ll say it again: how can hiding sex be healthy? How can hiding sex and lauding violence be healthy? How, in fact, can it be healthy to make violence sexy? Not that there was any violence at the conference (except for the bear). I just can’t help connecting the two, living as I do here on Earth, planet of the crazies.
