what if…

What if…

…just like speeding, working your ass off only brings your death closer? Wait, I’ll try again. What if working really hard and filling your day with relevant tasks only brings your ultimate day closer? Just like speeding in a car only really saves you a minute or two and increases your chance of getting killed in a horrible accident. Drive fast = increased chance of early death; live fast – increased chance of early death. You see? How much does working yourself ragged really benefit you?

I got the idea after dodging a shmuck who was driving too fast down Gov’t Street. I had been trying to call Aaron to see if he was up for some lunch (he was kinda under the weather) and his phone was off so I figured he was trying to get some rest. But for him that probably only meant turning off his phone & ICQ and continuing to work. Then this guy drives madly past and I drew the comparison. Aaron- needs rest but works anyway, risking his fragile health. This moron behind the wheel- needs a kick in the ass- (oh, sorry)- needs to take the extra thirty seconds and arrive alive.

So they’re both pushing too hard. Hmm… (Things that make you go…)*

  1. I’ve always thought that working hard was sort of like being hard on your health – you could abuse yourself for awhile, but only during some parts of your life.

So at 20 years old if you eat McDonald’s and smoke 2 packs every day, it’s just gonna slow you right down and make you smell bad. But it won’t kill ya. If you do the same thing at age 45… well it’s been nice knowing you.

Same with work. I figure if you work really hard when you’re young that’s ok, but at some point you have have to slow down, both for your health, and because (hopefully) you have a family that needs you more than work.
